there is a paper, title is Optimal medical therapy with or without PCI for stable Coronary Disease published in New England Journal of Medicine, www.NEJM.org this April 12th, Vol 356,#15,(you need to register, free)very famous trial, has been cited by many doctors. still lots of physicians don't believe this. It would be too much detail for you to read, I assume, but you can just read the result part.
I am not sure about the indication of spiral CT angiogram is usually performed here both for diagnostic
and therapetic but they do use lots of contrast. They do use MRI in US but only a few center can do that.
If you father is asymtomatic to begin with, and with only one vessel stenosis, you could expect very nice outcome if he has the stent placed
