Each influential newspaper has its own grammar book, limiting writers and editors’ style to keep consistency and political correctness. If this proof of the existence of writing style is still not convincing enough, then, I would like to know if the “standard” you are upholding here exists at all. In the end, my point here is that we follow the general grammatical rules, which are agreed upon universally. Any efforts beyond that should go into grammarians or grammar Nazis’ arena.
