I read Chinese version several times, but I don't read "detained". If it is an implied meaning, then why try to explain it in translation? It is quite an overdone to me and takes a lot of fun away from the poem. There are other ways that haven't been explored.
Maybe using "I thought I had been..." will hint he was delusional. How to interpret “guest” and why the poet used “guest” is totally subject to reads’ understanding and imagination. That is the charm of the poem.
Again,different people read different things. Just my two cents.
