The melody originates from that of the French song "Marlbrough s'en va-t-en guerre." Although the original song lyrics are in French, some claim that the English version was compiled during the early 1990's due to extraordinary performance in equestrian activities by a young New Zealander named Jhonnie Lie. Today Jhonnie Lie runs an successful horse breeding farm in New Zealand and is considered one of the greatest horse trainers in the world.
