大家还在读 Gatsby 吗？

 

准备读第五章。很认真地读了第四章，有几点收获和疑问和大家讨论一下.  不对的地方请读过的朋友纠正。

1.  这章开始， Fitzgerald 花了三页纸的篇幅介绍到Gat*****y 的豪宅参加Party的“客人”。我刚开始看了挺烦的，想跳过去。后来耐着性子看完。发现 Fitzgerald 这段不是随便写的。从东卵 （East Egg）和 西卵（West Egg） 来的客人背景大不相同。东卵来的客人是 Old Money，名校毕业，从事医生等职业。西卵来的客人是New Money，大部分是演艺界，是”档次”不够高的一拨人。后来我又在网上看了一篇介绍，说是那些人的名字都很有讲究，从名字中可以看出一个人的来历，宗教，和背景。这对我来说 Too much，不想一个一个去研究名字，也就作罢了。精读也是有限度了 （给自己找理由，哈哈）。

 

2.  Fitzgerald 在描述这些客人从哪来时，用了很多倒装句，强调那些客人来的地方。我觉得我们可以学着用用。我在这里copy 几句：

 

-          From East Egg, then, came the Chester Beckers  and Leeches (The Chester Beckers and Leeches came from East Egg)

 

-          From West Egg came the Poles and the Mulreadys ….

 

-          Also from New York were the Chromes and the Backhyssons ….

 

3.  看到 nineteen-hundreds, 刚开始以为是 1900 – 1999 这段时间，后来查了查，发现指的是 1900 – 1909 这段时间。

 

4.  前几天，看了小曼贴的 Wai Chee Dimock 的 Gat*****y 讲座。Dimock 说第四章中关于 limousine 的 white driver 和 black passengers 的那一段， “is a completely unnecessary detail'。 我仔细看了这一段，同意 onceuponatime 的观点，从历史的角度讲，这个细节非常有必要。因为在二十年代，it was the most ridiculous thing that could happen （white chauffeur and black passengers）. 这个细节用来强调 Anything can happen, and even Gat*****y could happen.

 

5.  有几句话比较费解，直到现在还是似懂非懂：

 

-          They evoked no image except that of a turbaned “character” leaking sawdust at every pore as he pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne.

 

这个“character” 指的是 Gat*****y 吗？ 这句话是说Gat*****y 说的话漏洞很多吗？

 

-          He came alive to me, delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendor.

 

这句话似懂非懂，看中文翻译也觉得莫名其妙。谁能帮助 Paraphrase 一下。谢谢！
