I think you make a good decision.

I did the same thing as you are doing a few months ago.
(I just post my new home pictures on this forum. For a closure house, I did a lot of works on it before and after we move in it, most of them are improvement, like painting, wood/tile flooring, a little repairing.)

As long as you are living in it, you don't lose anything, even it may go down in near future, but it wouldn't go down forever, if you are going to live there for 5 years, I think you'll gain, not lose money.
