If you compare Japanese cars and Europen cars. Long run the total cost will be same or cheaper. Because I bought my first new car in 1987 that Toyota top of line $20,000 that before Lexus. Only drove 90,000. I have 2005 Volvo S80 new in 2005. Now, drive still like and feel as new. Strong, speed, and all in perfect condition. Only replaced highlight bulbs and break. That batter last for 8 years. No Japanese car bettery over 8 years (I did not heard yet).
