we just got back from camping less than 2 weeks ago

That was my first camping as well. I don't really have any advice because i don't know what king of camping you guys are going on.

We hiking 20 miles in one day, so for us, plenty of water,very good boots, sunblocks and good hat are very important.

For camp ground, make sure you keep all you possible food,even toothpaste in the food storage at all the time and not feed any animal!!!
