Lowes and Menards have runners in the carpet area too. it's a DIY project done by myself. I did not check around to find out what is the "Standard way" to install runners on stairs. I just did it on my imagination, it's primarily for my kids' saftey concern. Here are the steps I did (again, not sure what is the "right" way to do it):
1. Measure the whole length: including the steps, the nose (you have to count it twice since you will wrap the runner on all surface, the riser (每节台阶竖直的部分). 这步对买材料挺重要,我不好说店里给不给退,如果有余头的话 (店里卖的时候是按每尺收钱的). 你可以量一级,然后作算术把总长算出来; 也可以用长的软绳子伏贴的在楼梯上走一遍,做记号,放到平地上量总长.
2. buy the runners: pattern, color, etc. For me, any color not in black.
3. In the same area where you find the runner, they also have some related tools for sale. I bought two packages of "for carpet use: double sided tpae".
4. Cut the tape at the same (or a bit of shorter) length as the width of the runner, then, fastern them down to the each step (水平的台阶,就是踩脚的地方). I chose the middle part of each step, but in the evening when my hu*****and came back and asked me how I did it, he commented that that tape should be closer to the front (台阶的前沿;就是如果滑的话,脚是用力向前把地来阻止下滑, 对吧?). 他是物理专业的,应是对的;做事比我细心. 还说我搞得有些不直,应等他回来一起弄. "well, I just want to give you a surprise"! :))))
5. ok, now it's the time to 一气呵成: 工欲善其事,必先利其器: the cordless power tool, at least one electrical drill. I started from the bottom, align and press the runner against the riser, drill in the screws directly. (I used the 1-1/4 dryall screw left from my basement project; 这里可能有最大的问题,应为我是"即兴创作",没提前查好; 店里好像有专门的钉子, 但我没气钉机, 也没力气一个一个敲, so that was out of the option at all. Using the dry wall screws was mainly for the availability, I first check it to see if this worked, and it did! Nothing pretruded on the back side of the stairs.) crossing the width, say 2 screws on sides or 3 screws. Then my kids would happily peel out the paper on the double sided tape and the Momi will firmyl press down the runner to the step and they laughed....follow this step on each stairs, one by one.
就是:平台上用 tape; riser 上用 screws.
