1。open shelves. I like it anyway, since I like to have plants near the window. But if someone does not like it, you can move the open shelves to the right end (the end originally you hang the microwave), it's also make things easily accessible from that direction.
2. I have seen others have the matched style-color cornice over the window, it looks very cohesive (整体感), better than leave the break in-between.
3. Have you consider to have a lower level part of the island for the little kids? If I were about to remodel mine, I would. I will try to search some pictures for you. It is my opinion that kitchen should not designed only to Momies, :) it should be a space that everyone can find some fun! I have a small table for my kids beside the island now, for their "make dinners" toys and similar activities.
