Abraham had a total of eight sons mentioned by name in the Bible. They were born to three different women: his wife Sarah, Sarah's servant Hagar, and another wife, Keturah, whom Abraham married after Sarah's death.
The Sons of Abraham
The sons, listed generally in order of birth, were:
- Ishmael (Mother: Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian servant): Ishmael was Abraham's firstborn son, born when Abraham was 86 years old. He is considered the ancestor of the Ishmaelite people (generally associated with Arab nations).
- Isaac (Mother: Sarah, Abraham's wife): Isaac was the "son of the promise," miraculously born when Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90, well past childbearing age. God established His covenant through Isaac, who became the father of Jacob (also named Israel) and Esau, and the ancestor of the Israelite people.
- Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah (Mother: Keturah, whom Abraham married after Sarah died， 100+ years): After Sarah's death, Abraham married Keturah, who bore him six additional sons. Abraham gave them gifts and sent them eastward, away from Isaac, during his lifetime. Their descendants became various Arabian tribes.
