To plant bare root plants, first soak the roots in water for one to several hours, depending on the plant type. Next, dig a hole large enough for the roots to spread out naturally. Plant the item, ensuring the crown or graft union is at or just slightly above ground level, and backfill the hole with soil, firming it gently. Finally, water thoroughly to settle the soil and add mulch around the base.
