private school is not always

better.

Big red fox, Sorry to disappoint you, you just have a smart kid, that's all. Different kids have different learning pace. My son could not talk until his second birthday, but he started reading when he was three and half. Now in age of 5 and half, he is reading nonfiction chapter books and juvenile scientific materials. Nobody taught him, he learned reading while playing computer games. However, when he turns age 10, there will be no difference between him and his peer in terms of reading skills. My son was in daycare and now in public school kindergarten.

Personally, I don’t think it worth sending kids to private school, unless you are very rich and $25,000 after tax income (One year tuition of a good private school) means a piece cake to you. Here are my reasons:

1. I seriously consult a friend about whether I should send my kid to private school. My friend and her two siblings are all Harvard graduates (B.S. and M.D. or M.D./Ph.D). My friend herself is number 1 in her undergraduate class. She is on job market right now, and top medical schools are creating faculty position for her. Her two siblings are just as successful as she is. Her opinion is that I should not worry about my son’s future too much, a good public school is good enough. She graduated from a good, but not excellent public school. In her freshman year, she did feel pressure from those classmates from prestigious New England private schools. However, good students from public school started to show their potential in sophomore year.

2. I have another friend sending her daughter to private school. The only reason is her daughter has some hearing problem, and she was teased during class recession in public school. She would prefer a good public school if she could choose, since she feels that gifted program in public school is individual tailored, but there is no difference in private school.

3. My ex-boss’s daughters are in the best private school of the city. I overheard things like kids playing Hockey in Alaska; riding private jet home after tournament, ect. From his assistant. If I sent my son to a school like that, I am sure that my son would be very unhappy living under the shadow of his wealthy classmates.
