彼得是耶稣最看重的门徒。原名叫西门，跟随耶稣后，耶稣赐名“彼得”，意思是“磐石”。"我还告诉你，你是彼得，我要把我的教会建造在这磐石上。”

耶稣预言自己的被捕、受难，对彼得说：你会三次不认我。彼得说：我就是跟你一起死，也不会不认你！

然而，果然。耶稣被捕时，别人看到彼得说：你跟他是一伙的吧？彼得接连三次否认，甚至赌咒发誓说：我不认识这个人。

磐石软弱了，出来就痛哭。

余生大力传教，最终殉教。殉教时本来也要被钉十字架，但认为自己不配跟跟耶稣一样，于是要求头上脚下倒钉。

在天主教理论里，耶稣似乎并没有记仇。彼得最后还是掌管了天国的钥匙，成为圣徒中的圣徒，天主教万世之大弟子，梵蒂冈富丽堂皇大教堂的享祀者。

各种圣徒像里，手拿钥匙的就是他。
