一早看到日本友人对美国橄榄球感兴趣, 深感欣慰. 橄榄球在我心目中是最刺激的运动. 我简单回答下八贤王的问题

要看懂橄榄球, 首先要知道各位置和球队组成

在 Pre-season 前, 一支球队可以收到 90+个球员, 但一部分是充数的, 我们叫他们 camp fodders.  到 Season 开始一支球队要 downsize 到 53个球员, 被开的球员有机会被收集到 practices squad, up to 7 players.

球队分为进攻队 (offense), 防守队(defense), 和特别队(special team)

橄榄球人流行说法是: Offense wins games, defense wins championships.  所以防守超强的队赢超级杯冠军, 代表队有 Chicago Bears in 1985, NY Giants in 1986, Baltimore Ravens in 2000, and etc

但球迷们都喜欢看进攻, 所以我先说下进攻队

进攻队最重要是 Quarterback (QB). 要是能在每年四月份选秀 (draft) 挑到是很幸运的.  1st round pick 不一定就是好的, 很多都是 college 厉害, NFL 被防守队打回原形的 busts. 

Quarterback's supporting cast 包括 Running Back (RB) or Half Back (HB), Receivers (Wide Receivers or WR (Split end, flanker, slot receivers), Tight end (TE).  以前还有个位置叫 Full Back (FB) 但现在已经很少用了.  

橄榄球 能够跑起来 (running game) 就已经赢一大半.  

But, games are won in the trenches

Quarterback 前面的五条大汉 (Offensive Line, or OL) 才是赢球的关键.  从左到右分别是 Left Tackle (LT), Left Guard (LG), Center (C), Right Guard (RG), Right Tackle.  Left Tackle 是最重要 (所以是最贵的), 因为他保护 Quarterback 的  blind side.  但其他位置也很重要, 如好的 center + guards, 可以在中间撕开个大口让后面的Running Back 跑.  

在每个 Down 前, Offensive team 都要排好阵 (formation), 常用的有 I-formation, Shotgun formation,  goalline formation (Jumbo set), and etc.

橄榄球 有很多战术 (game plan), 如 screen play, reverse, Go routes, and etc.

先讲讲谁能接球.  理论上谁都可以.  但 offenive linemen 接球要过 line of scrimmage 先通知 referees.  不然接住也犯规 (ineligible player downfield).  QB 在 line of scrimmage 后面也可以接住自己传的球.
