my in-laws semi- retired

my mother in-law retired from LA a few years ago, now she's working in a public school in Ms, and plans to work a few more years to get the 2nd pension.
My father in-law has someone to run his business located out of town. He drove 5 hrs to checks up on his business every two weeks.Last year, he got too bored at home and applied for a police job but got rejected.

I don't think I would ever be able to retire based on their standard nor would my hu*****and agree on me to retire ever, zzzzzzzzzzz
