You are too naive!
For generations and generations in China, the elders have always counted on their sons and daughters to support them. For the majority of the people living in China, there is no established social network to support when they get old. This is exactly the reason that the laws in China explicitly state that everyone has the obligation to support his/her parents once they can’t be self-sufficient. For most peasants there, once they send their kids through college, and help them get married, there will be no savings left. How can you ask them not to count on their kids when they get old? You probably never lived in the countryside in China. If you did, you wouldn’t think this way.
