I was just at a fusion conference in Washington DC. I saw the Chinese delegation from an institute called inest, which is an office at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Apparently, this office is following a combination of both fission and fusion research. The speaker was a very young Ph.D. He said that inest has a staff of 500 people, and that their average age was 30.
