Two new grapefruit types have begun popping up at farmers markets and even in stores. The “Cocktail Grapefruit” (retailing for about $1 each) is actually a mandelo, a sweet cross of two mandarin varieties and a pomelo. Think bright grapefruit flavor without the pucker. It was first developed in 1966 at UC Riverside. It has thin skin and brilliant orange flesh — and a lot of seeds, which makes it perfect for juicing. The second is the Oro Blanco ($1.50) or white gold grapefruit. This also was developed at UC Riverside and first crossed in 1958. It has a very thick, spongy rind, which tells you that one of its parents is a pomelo. The other is a low-acid white grapefruit. The result is sweet, very juicy and seedless, with a wonderful floral aroma.
