Likely, your EFC is higher than the cost for good college.

However, yuor kid are good enough to attract other colleges, which is willing to give some merit-based scholarship. This is a common practice for lower-ranked college to attract good student.

Because each college has it's unique formula to calculate EFC, for a family, the number could be +/-5000 easily.
