We just bought a new house in Florida and have not moved in yet.
Home Depot sent a guy from ARS Rescue and Rooter to do air condition inspection on Tuesday. The guy said that our air condition is leaking and needs to be replaced. He suggested us to replace our old Goodman air-conditioning system (10 SEER) with Trane XL16i (2 speed and 16 SEER) for $12214. We contacted another local air conditioning company suggested by our realtor. This guy said that he only install Goodman for 16 SEER, the cost is around $4500 which is much cheaper. I have also spoken with the company who did maintenance inspection on 7/19/2010 for the house we bought. This company said that their records show the air conditioner worked on 7/19/2010. Since we have not moved in yet, he suggested us to move in and use the air condition for a while to see what the problems are before deciding what to do with our central air conditioner. But I told him that I would like to replace our old central air conditioning system. He agreed to send someone to do free estimation for us this afternoon.
My question is whether or not Trane is much better than Goodman? I search on the Internet, someone said (http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hvac/msg0610260614882.html):
Goodman was 68% chance of failure
Trane 7%
Lennox 3%
Is that true? Is it worthwhile to buy Trane central air conditioner XL16i for $12214? I am also worried that our local ARS Rescue and Rooter who suppose to install Trane XL16i for us is not a Trane dealer. But it is the only contractor Home Depot has in our area. Should I contact one of Trane dealer for installation?
Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
