help: How to organize kids birthday party?

My son's 6-yr birthday is coming. We have never held a party for him. I would like to organize a first, big party for him this year. Should we have it at home or other places? He was invited to his friends' parties a couple of times before in Mcdonald's and playgrouds...I heard some parties invited Clowns to come. Is it a good idea? Any information is appreciated. Thanks a lot.
