My version of the poem came from a book『101 famous poems』so I just stayed with the words.

For delay, I wasn't quite sure about this part. Maybe "he tried to delay it more and stay around, but he had to go at last." or maybe the whole visit was a delay, or he was delayed for work...

You are right, I have to change the "lawyers" part.

I saw the " child-birth pain" version, the wasting pain sounds longer, more boring.
