Harbaugh Super Bowl: Sibling rivalries in sports can take the big game to a whole new level (ZT)

The Harbaugh brothers. John (Baltimore) and younger brother Jim (San Francisco) are the first siblings to square off against each other as coaches in the NFL's biggest game, next Sunday's clash for pro football's championship.

In 2011, they met as opposing coaches for the first time in the regular season, with the Ravens prevailing 16-6.

Families

Talent tends to run in families.

There have been 348 sets of brothers reaching the NFL as players, and their stories are strikingly similar.

Most played the same position, careers overlapping, like quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. Several played for the same team, including the six Nessers who played for the 1921 Columbus Panhandles.

Brothers who did battle often had interesting matchups. Imagine Ted Karras, once a lineman for the Chicago Bears, blocking his younger brother, Alex, a fearsome defensive end who became a Hall of Famer with the Detroit Lions.

Houston lineman Bruce Matthews saw plenty of a familiar face: Cleveland and Atlanta linebacker Clay Matthews. Their NFL teams played against each other 24 times. Clay's team won 13 times, Bruce's 11.

Safety Terrence Holt was fortunate that teammates Dre' Bly (Detroit) and Roderick Hood (Arizona) were there to chase his older brother, Torry, a receiver who caught 23 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns in their games against each other.

Colts cornerback Vontae Davis will watch his older brother, Vernon, play tight end in this Super Bowl for the 49ers.

The NBA has seen at least 50 sets of brothers, including Indianapolis natives Jeff and Marquis Teague, the Han*****roughs, Pau and Marc Gasol, the three Barry brothers, and Dominique and Gerald Wilkins.

The NHL had six Sutter brothers, playing nearly 5,000 games in the 1970s and '80s. They won six Stanley Cup championships as players, with Darryl winning a seventh in 2012 as coach of the Los Angeles Kings.

Indy-car racing has seen the Chevrolets, the Rathmanns, the Unsers, the Mearses, the Bettenhausens, the Whittingtons, the Snevas and the Laziers, to name a few sets competing on the track. NASCAR has had the Allisons, Waltrips, Labontes, Bodines, Burtons and now the Busches.

Said Bobby Unser: "I always wanted to beat my brother first."

In tennis, it's sisters. Serena Williams holds the head-to-head edge on the older Venus 13-10.

Long odds

Kathy Ensor, statistics department chair at Rice University, calculated the odds of brothers coaching against each other in the Super Bowl at 1 in 255. That is when there are head coaches as brothers in the two NFL conferences. The odds go off the charts when considering football coaches at other levels of the game, such as college.

"Any way you calculate it, the odds are long and get longer as the pool (of teams) expands," said Ensor, a member of the American Statistical Association.

The odds of the Harbaughs being able to escape the game in New Orleans happy for the other depends on their relationship, a local sports psychologist said.

"If they have a good, solid, stable relationship, with love and respect, then competition can be healthy, and it doesn't have to paralyze or disable the brotherly relationship," said Chris Carr, the sport and performance psychologist at St. Vincent Sports Performance.

"If they can focus on the right things to be competitive and compete at a very high level, then regardless of the outcome . . . you're happy for your sibling even as you're disappointed in your own loss."

The Harbaugh brothers, who were born 15 months apart, shared a bedroom as kids. Both wound up playing college football; John was a defensive back at Miami (Ohio) and Jim was a star quarterback at Michigan. John went into coaching after graduation. Jim was picked in the first round of the 1987 draft by the Chicago Bears, spent four years with the Colts in the mid-1990s and wound up passing for 26,288 yards and 129 touchdowns in his 14-year pro career before turning to coaching.
