Bumps on the road towards a diving license (1)
Mastering bicycle riding was a truely thrilling process in my childood. Learning car driving was another exciting experience shortly after I settled down in States. Full of expectations, I registered a scuba diving class in one of PADI branch offices.
The rule of obtaining diving license is pretty simple: passing a wrtten test and completing 5 diving trips and technique requirements, similar to get a driving license.
"Here are the diving manual, diving table, and other tools" Head coach briefed. "But, before we start, PADI requires you fill and sign this form. This is the last chance you can back off", she smiled. The form warns risks from injury to death during diving train periods and mandates the trainees yield the litigation rights against PADI.
I made a quick scan on facial expressions of classmates, and found them quite comfortable to the clause. With a brief hesitation, I signed the form with my mind where excitment trickles away and nerves tense up.
The first diving trip was held in a swimming pool. The main topics include: how to wear diving suite, oxygen cylinder, how to breathe, how to clean mask, how to communicate using hand signs underwater, among others. When I was sitting and practicing my routines on the bottom of pool, I had good time to watch others' funny movements. S is a small yet round lady. With the clumsy and inflated suite, she was floating, rotating, and revolving on surface but sinking downward to the bottom. After deflating the suite, S, glowing on her face, already drifted from one end to the other while teachers were busy in handling others’ emergencies.
