Meaning: Species adapt and change by natural selection with the best suited
mutations becoming dominant.

Here is a quote from Facebook:
It's not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most
intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. - Charles Darwin
Darwin didn't say "the fittest" first. According to my source, it was Herbert
Spencer who coined the phrase after reading "On the Origin of Species." In the
light of the above quote, "the fittest" would have meant "the one most
responsive to change." Darwin adopted the phrase later.
'fit' still means 'ready' but another meaning, 'physically sound,' seems more
popular nowadays. When fitness becomes an industry and it's all about hunky
muscles sculpted out to impress, Darwin's message is lost. Such is the way of
the Tao: 天下皆知美之为美,斯恶已.
