闲聊英语中的双重否定句子

在英语中使用双重否定句子是一个令人困惑的问题；对美国人也是如此。一些学者建议避免使用双重否定

句子。但在现实中，双重否定句子还是大量存在在口语，电影对白以及文章中。实际上，英语中的双重否定

(Double Negative) 还是否定的意思，只是强调否定。下面是一些双重否定句子的例子：

(例句取自一些英语书籍)

After he was laid off, Hal realized that he didn't need none of the luxuries.

 

Mr. Brown said he ain't got none of those apples that you want.

 

Bart says he hasn't seen Betty nowhere. 

 

令人困惑的是双重否定句子有时表示肯定的意思，但经常是有一点肯定(lukewarm)。见下面的例句： 

 

I was not unhappy with my recent raise. 

 

在新浪亦明博客有博文讨论《社会契约论》的翻译，其中也有一段与双重否定有关，

即 the least unworthy 的翻译： 

 

卢梭的《社会契约论》英译片段：

 

Of the various segments that could have been taken from what I had written, this one is the longest, and seems to me the least unworthy of being offered to the public.

  

其林译：在其中可以单独提取出来的各种片段中，这本书是最长的，好像也是最不值得公布于众的一部分。

方舟子译：在我已写完的各个可抽取出来的片段中，这个是最有份量，我想也是最值得提供给公众的。

  

何兆武译：。。。。。。，自以为还不是不值得贡献于公众之前。

 

在英语中还有一些以“双重”带头有争议的论题，如，双重介词 (inside of , from among, etc.)；

双重所有格 (a friend of mine, an interpretation of Ruskin's, etc)。
