【One Idiom】Hit the hay

I am typically very tired by Friday night and prefer to take a nap even before the normal bed time. Literally,  the bonus for the kids is we order McDonald's. So last Friday when we drove through the window to fetch our food, I said, "sis, you have to drink the milk when you eat chicken nuggets. I will take a nap after you finish your milk. "

My old daughter looked at me and chuckled, "Time to hit the hay. "

 

Hit the hay has origins in the late 1800s to early 1900s in America. Around this time, people would stuff burlap sacks with hay to create comfortable bedding. To hit the hay refers to the act of landing on the makeshift mattress and preparing for sleep.
