1. NewVoice 和 Sportwoman说得对，一般情况下，一个句子里不能有两个完整的句子，你的“He said...”和“the real issue is...”就是两个句子。

2. 你可以用下面几个办法来解决这个问题：

(1) He said this was not an issue. The real issue is that Mary's mother has too many children.

(2) He said this was not an issue and the real issue is that Mary's mother has too many children.

(3) He said this was not an issue; the real issue is that Mary's mother has too many children.

(4) He said this was not an issue, the real issue being that Mary's mother has too many children.

(5) With the real issue being that Mary's mother has too many children, he said this was not an issue, .

前面三个改句比较容易理解，第(4)个是分词短语带自己的主语，叫分词独立结构，相当于分词短语作状语带自己的主语。第(4)种句子里的分词短语前有时可带with，如第五句。你老师改得很好。你的句子就算是对的，但在意念上前后两个部分也平分了秋色--没有主次。你老师改过的句子，不但语法对了，而且是第二部分成为次要成分，表示前者的原因。
