Yang Yuwei moved to Sishui River, Shandong Province. His study faced the vast field with countless ancient tombs outside the walls. At night, the rustling sound of poplars could be heard just like roaring sea waves.
One midnight, Yang was reading in candle light with sorrowful feelings. Suddenly, he heard someone humming verses outside the walls, “A wailing head-wind is blowing in the pitch-dark night, the flying fireflies skimmed over the grass and rested on my dress.”
The verses were hummed time and again and the voice was rather plaintive. Listening attentively, Yang found the feeble voice seemingly belonged to a woman. But he felt quite doubtful about it.
Next day, Yang went out of the walls to have a look, but there were no human footmarks at all. The only thing he found was a purple lace which was lost among the thick thorns. He picked the lace and put it onto the window.
Nearly at the second watch of the night, the same verses were hummed again as last night. Standing on a stool, Yang peeped out. But the voice stopped abruptly. He realized it was a female ghost, yet, he still admired her.

Next evening, Yang bended his body over the walls and observed attentively. Nearly at the end of the first watch of the night, a girl slowly came out from within the thick growth of weeds and then began to hum the verses sorrowfully with her head bending in meditation and her hands holding a small tree.
Yang gave off a slight cough. The girl hurriedly ran into the weeds and vanished swiftly. Yang awaited continuously at the walls. When she finished her humming, he added two sentences to her verses within the walls, “Who knows my secret sorrow and pain? Thin-clad, I’m standing under the rising moon.”
It was deadly still. This terrible state lasted for a long time. Yang went into his study. Shortly after his setting down, the beauty suddenly came in.
She lifted her long sleeves and said, “You’re an elegant gentleman. I feel scared and always try to evade you.”
Feeling delighted, Yang pulled her over and asked her to sit down. Her body was gaunt. Her manner was nervous. There was quite a cold nip stagnated on her skin. She was seemingly too thin and feeble to bear the weight of her dress.
“Where do you come from?” Yang asked. “How long have you been here?”
“I came from Gansu Province.” The girl said. “I once led a wandering life with my father and finally lodged here. I died of a sudden fatal disease at the age of seventeen. More than twenty years passed. Living in the nether world and wild field, I feel terribly alone and helpless just like a lonely egret. What I hummed is composed by myself. The purpose is only to express my secret hatred. I’ve been thinking for a long time, but I can’t think out the last two sentences. I’m obliged to you for your kind help. Your excellent verses gave me a great joy. I’ll be happy all the time in the nether world.”
Yang wanted to sleep with her but was refused.
The girl sorrowfully said, “I’m only a skeleton in the gloomy nether world.” She added. “I’m completely different with the living human beings. If I have any transgression with living human beings, their life will be cut short. I have no heart to hurt you.”
Hearing what she said, Yang changed his mind. Jokingly touching her chest, he found her breasts as hard as that of maidens. Then he wanted to see her little feet under her skirt.
“You madman!” she said. “How crazy you are!”
Playing with her lovely feet, he found her colorful silk socks and embroidered shoes quite beautiful as exquisite handicraft articles. But he suddenly noticed that only one sock was fastened with a purple lace, while the other one, with a piece of colorful thread.
“Why don’t you fasten both of your two shoes with laces?” Yang asked.
“Last night I was completely absorbed in evading you and didn’t know where I lost my lace.” said the girl.
“Let me change it for you,” Yang replied and took off the lace from the window.
The girl looked at him with a great surprise. He told her all about it. The girl undid the thread and fastened her sock with the lace.
Leafing through the books on the table, the girl found >.
“I liked to read this before my death,” she said with deep feelings. “Seeing it today, I feel confused as if in a dream!”
Talking about verses with her, Yang found the girl very intelligent in this aspect. Having a heart-to-heart talk with her in the candle light, he felt very happy as if getting a good friend.

From then on, so long as she heard Yang humming verses in a soft voice at night, the girl would come very soon.
“Please don’t disclose our secret,” the girl often exhorted Yang like this. “I’m too timid to meet strangers. And I’m afraid I may be harassed by rude guests.”
Yang readily agreed. They were getting along well with each other just like fish in water. Although they didn’t have any transgression, they were near and dear as if between hu*****and and wife. The girl often copied verses for Yang. Her handwriting was extremely beautiful.
Moreover, according to the girl’s advice, Yang not only made a checkerboard by himself but also bought a lute. Every evening, the girl taught Yang how to have a game of chess or played the lute by herself. Sometimes she played a piece of sad melody which he had no heart to listen to from beginning to end. Then she would change the sad melody into a happy one. And only at this moment, did he suddenly have his mind at ease.
Completely absorbed in games, they were often failed to realize day break. Noticing the light of early dawn on the window, the girl would flee hurry-scurry.

One day, Xue paid a visit to Yang who was then having a daytime sleep. Seeing the chess and lute, Xue felt strange because he knew Yang wasn’t good at these sort of things. Flipping through the verses and finding the graceful handwriting, he felt much more suspicious.
Immediately after Yang waked up, he asked, “Where do the chess and lute come from?”
“I want to learn something,” Yang said.
To be asked about the verses, he said he borrowed them from a friend. But Xue scrutinized the verses time and again and finally found a line of small words in the last page clearly showing the date, the month and the name of the copyist, Liansuo.
“It’s a typical female handwriting,” Xue said. “Why are you cheating me?”
To be landed in an awkward predicament, Yang could say nothing. Although questioned closely, Yang still kept silent. Only after Xue rolled the verses and put them in his arms did Yang told him the whole story.
Xue wanted to see the girl. Yang told him about her exhortation. But Xue sincerely admired her. Facing his sincerity, Yang could do nothing but agree.
When the girl came at night, Yang introduced Xue to the girl who was very angry.
“What did I tell you?” she asked. “Why are you so gossipy?”
Yang told her the truth.
“Our relationship finished!” said the girl.
Yang tried his best to comfort her. But she was still very unhappy.
She stood up and wanted to leave, saying, “I’m going to avoid your place for the time being.”

Next day, Xue wanted to come again. Yang told him about her refusal.
Thinking this might be her pretext, Xue came in the evening together with two fiends.
Deliberately disturbing Yang, they stayed for a long time and refused to leave. With uproarious talk and laughter, they ran wild throughout the night. Although having a repugnance to them, Yang didn’t know what to do.
Seeing no signs that the girl could come again, they were going to leave and the clamor seemed to be finished.
Yet, they suddenly heard someone humming verses. All of them listened attentively and found the voice very grievous.
Xue was fascinated by the voice, while one of his friends Wang couldn’t sit still. This one was an unrestrained man. He threw a large stone and cried out, “Don’t put on an act,” he said. “Why do you refuse to see guests? You are humming sorrowfully and make us worried and distressed!”
The humming stopped immediately. Wang was blamed by all the people, especially by Yang who looked terribly angry.
Next day, all the guests left. Lonely sleeping in his room, Yang earnestly wished the girl would come again. But there were no signs of her return.
Two days later, the girl came suddenly.
Grievously weeping, she said, “You brought bad guests. I was deadly scared!”
Yang said sorry to her repeatedly. The girl went out abruptly and said, “Our relationship really finished. We part forever.”
Yang wanted to urge her to stay. But the girl already vanished. From then on, the girl hadn’t been reappeared for over a month. Yang missed her terribly so that he became thinner and thinner and at last simply reduced himself to a skeleton. He felt too late to repent for what he did.

One evening, Yang was drinking wine alone. The girl suddenly came in.
Extremely delighted, Yang asked, “You forgive me?”
With tears in eyes, the girl just kept silent. Asked earnestly, did she mince her words,“ I ran away in a fit of pique and now come here again to seek your help. So I feel much ashamed.”
Only being asked repeatedly did she say, “Recently, a dirty ghost official forced me to marry him as his second wife. I don’t know where he comes from. As a girl from a decent family, how can I marry a ghost? But as weak as I am, how can I refuse him? If you consider me your wife, you surely don’t have the heart to let me struggle to live on by myself.”
Angrily standing up, Yang said he was willing to risk his life to save her. But he didn’t know what to do because of the differences between human being and ghost.
“Tomorrow evening, you should go to bed early,” said the girl. “I’ll see you in your dream.”
Sitting together, they talked and talked until day break. On leaving, the girl exhorted him again not to sleep in day time so as to have a good sleep at night for meeting in dream. Yang agreed.
In the afternoon, drinking a little bit and having a feeling of being drunken, Yang climbed onto his bed and laid on his back with his clothes covering him.
Yang suddenly found the girl coming. She gave him a knife and pulled him out. Shortly, they came into a compound and heard someone knocking at the door with a stone just at the moment they wanted to close the door.
“My enemy comes!” said the girl, being scared to death.
Pushing the door open, Yang rushed out and found a man in black wearing a red hat with a beard around his mouth just like hedge-hog hair.
Yang yelled at him angrily. Giving angry looks, the ghost official talked insolently. Yang flared up and dashed forward. The ghost official picked up stones and threw them to Yang. Swiftly and fiercely as storms, the stones hit his wrist which were too painful to hold a knife.
Just at this critical moment, Yang saw a man standing far off with bow and arrow in his waist as if to go hunting. Scrutinizing, he found the man was his friend Wang. He cried out immediately for help. On hearing his cry, Wang bended his bow and made a shooting. The ghost was hit in his bottom. Wang gave another shooting, the ghost died.
Yang was delighted and thanked Wang. Wang asked what had happened and Yang told him the whole story.

Delightedly thinking he could now atone for his previous misdeeds, Wang followed Yang into the room where the girl was sitting timidly. Feeling ashamed and shivering with fear, the girl was standing far away without saying anything.
There was a small knife on the table, a little more than a foot long, decorated with gold and jade, dazzling brilliant when being taken off the box. Wang loved it so much that he simply couldn’t tear himself away from the knife.
Seeing the girl’s piteous looks, Wang left after saying something to Yang. And Yang went back by himself. But he suddenly fell down at the foot of the wall and waked up immediately. Hearing rosters already began to crow, Yang realized he had been in along dream ever since the moment he was drunken yesterday up to now.
He felt terribly painful in his wrist. Looking in the light of early dawn, he found his skin injured swelling red.

A few minutes later, Wang came back and told his strange dream to Yang.
“You were shooting, right?” Yang asked.
In a dream and without being told, how could Yang know what he did? Wang was terribly surprised about it. Yang showed his hand to Wang and told him the reasons of his injury.
Recalling the girl in his dream, Wang felt quite sorry because of being unable to see her with his own eyes. Still thinking his merits outweighing demerits, Wang still hoped to see the girl.
In the evening, the girl came to say thanks. Yang sincerely persisted in saying that the girl was saved only because of Wang’s help.
“I’ll never forget his kindness,” said the girl to Wang. “But his awe-inspiring and dignified manner really scared me to death.” She said continuously. “I know he loves my knife. It was bought by my father with a lot of gold when he was out on official business. I love it very much and twined it with gold wire and then decorated it with pearls. My father took pity on my dying too young and buried it with me as a funerary object. Now I’m willing to give it to him as a souvenir. Seeing it is just like to see me.”
Next day, Yang told her aspiration to Wang, who was wide with joy. In the evening, the girl really came bringing the knife along with her.
“Give it to him. Exhort him to cherish it,” said the girl. “It’s not an ordinary knife.”
From then on, they had an intimate association with each other as usual.

One evening several months later, the girl smiled to Yang in lamplight as if having something to say. Hesitating with her face flushed, she opened her mouth but shut it again. Holding her tightly, Yang asked the girl.
“I’ve long been grateful to you for your love. With the breath of living people and the nutrition of the roasted food of this world, my bones began to show signs of revival. But only with the help of the living men’s semen, could I really be restored to life”
“Unless you refuse,” said Yang. “I’d be glad to help you.”
“After giving me your semen, you’ll be seriously ill for over twenty days,” said the girl. “But the medicines will have a precise curative effect.”
They had a sexual intercourse. Then, she put on her clothes and got up.
“I also need a drop of fresh blood,” said the girl. “Can you give me?”
Yang cut his left arm with a sharp knife and blood oozed out immediately. The girl laid on her back and let his blood drop into her belly button.
Getting up, the girl said, “I won’t come again. A hundred days later, you can go to see my tomb. So long as black birds appear and sing in the trees, you can open my tomb.”
Yang made a firm promise. Before leaving, she exhorted him again. “Do it just in time. Please remember. It won’t do either earlier or later!”
Ten days later, Yang was seriously ill, indeed. His belly was terribly bloated. Taking medicines, he found something like mud coming out from his body. Twelve days later, he recovered his health.
On the very day number 100, Yang asked his servant to wait before her tomb with a spade in hands. At dusk, they really found two black birds singing in the trees near her tomb.
“O.K.” Yang was delighted.
Cutting weeds and digging her tomb, they found the coffin utterly rotten but the girl’s appearance still lifelike. Touching her with his hand, Yang felt her body was lightly warm. Hurriedly covering her with clothes, they carried her back and put her in a warm place.
Taking some medicines, she began to breathe and finally became restored to life at midnight.
“How time flies!” she said to Yang. “More than twenty years have elapsed in a flash. It seems just like a dream.”
