The PUF technique can be added to heart-lung machine to concentrate hemoglobin. That was what we often added to our extracorporeal circulation experiments. The PUF technique can also be employed in Dialysis. This is the fast way to get rid of extra water in the body. Dr. Engen added two agressive maneuvers (Blood transfusion and PUF) which achieved his better blood concentration. The water taken out by these two maneuvers would better improve his wet lung.
And his walking on the ground would be another progress in reduction of his lung edema, and help his microcirculation. This physical activity would significantly increase his lung volume and capacity.
I expect that, the tree maneuvers - (1). PUF, (2). Blood transfusion, and (3). Patient's walking could bring the patient to another level of improvement.
This hospital also looks disorganized, evidenced by that there is even no one doctor in charge of the patient treatment plan, while Dr. Eagen showed more precise diagnosis of the patient's lung condition and added more skillful necessary treatment. It is this doctor's contribution that improved the condition of patient's lung and kidney.
You got the advice from the responsible nurse who encouraged you to get in a deeper involvement in this case, indicating all what you have done in the past is absolute correct. And here some people's critique against you is totally wrong, and not humanitarian too. Their critique indicated they should receive medical ethical education. In this hospital If the doctors don't get well organized, it is better just let Dr. Eagen do his job. If the other doctors change Dr. Eagen's plan, you may raise your hand, and you have the right to raise your hand.
