metformin may cause some neuromuscular skeletal side effect, such as weakness and muscle aches, I never heard of muscle atrophy, most often it cause some upset stomach. Are you also taking cholesterol lowering medications? They often cause muscle aches and related symptoms.
From what you describe, it sounds pretty serious. There is one serious and rare side effect caused by metformin, is called lactic acidosis. If you don't feel right, you should see and doctor and find out what's going on, your health is more important.
If the only medication you are taking is metformin, and it cause you so many problems, you should stop taking it, there are other generic medication for diabetes which is $4 a month at Walmart.
A lot of cities in US has program for people who has low income and no insurance, ask around, you should be able to find help.
