I just get my MBA degree with finance concentration from a third-tier Bschool. Before I came to the states, I had total about 7-8 years experiences in IT industry including 5 years in a famous multinational IT company in charge of business development and large account management. My objective is to find entry-level positions either in financial service industry or general management area.
In the past few months I applied hundreds of positions posted on the internet job board, contacted my personal and alumni network for advices and help, and talked with recruiters about possible opportunities, but the result is far from good. I know job market is tough right now, especially for the graduates from Bschools not in the top list. I need advices from you guys in terms of how to define my career direction and job search techniques:
1. Without direct experiences in financial service industry, is MBA strong enough to knock the door open?
2. How should I position myself? New graduate or experienced? Dose my previous experience count?
3. What are the effective ways searching jobs on Internet? I don't want just click "Apply" buttons like a robot. Of course I tailored my resume and CV to match the position requirements.
4. How to locate appropriate recruiters? I can find the best ones, but they also want you to be the best in terms of experiences and academic credentials.
5. What’s the appropriate approach to contact high profile network. For example, I emailed a MD of an investment bank and setup a phone information interview. On the phone I briefly talked about my background and showed my strong interest to find a position as an analyst or associate in his focusing area, let’s say fixed income. He introduced what he was doing, the trends of the industry, and the responsibilities of the positions I am looking for. But unfortunately there were no immediate openings right now and he would keep his eyes on possible future opportunities. Does this mean the door is closed?
Too many questions, I admit I am exhausted and can’t make sound judgment. Any advices and suggestions are more than welcomed. Many thanks in advance.
