旧金山湾区新西兰植物 Hebe 正开花简介

它和希腊神话中的青春女神Hebe同名. 作为植物名称和希腊神话的Hebe在中国大陆都没有译名. 台湾有音译译名: 赫柏或希比. 这里, 我还是暂用Hebe 原名.

前几天我的工作单位车库墙外一人高的绿篱开花了. 这植物我以前没有留意, 不认识. 我用手机google搜索了杜鹃花科图片, 没有查到类似的植物. 只好仔细检视它的花结构. 以期通过检索表确定它的科, 进而解开它的秘密.

加州大学伯克力分校Jepson 植物标本馆编制了一份加州植物分科检索表, 可用于查加州境内生长的本土和引种的植物所属的科. 我检索的结果是车前科 (Plantaginaceae). 我也试了从互动百科下载的由中国科学院植物研究所编写的被子植物门分科检索表. 这个检索表虽然只涵盖301科中国植物, 但只要外国植物落在这301科的范围内,仍有可能查出科名. 中国植物分科检索表给出的答案是玄参科 (Scrophulariaceae). 我略去这两科的分属检索表, 直接google搜索玄参科图片. 在反馈的两三页图册里, 我很快看到了一张相同植物的小图片. 打开它的网页, 相同的植物画面跃然屏幕上. 它是Hebe.

我再到Wikipedia网页查阅Hebe 和车前科, 才知道中国科学院植物研究所的被子植物分科检索表给出的答案玄参科和 Jepson 植物标本馆植物分科检索表给出的答案车前科并不矛盾. 因为最新的叶绿体基因分类将原属于玄参科的一些属划入车前科，除了Hebe, 还包括我在中国的旧识毛地黄, 婆婆纳, 金鱼草(snapdragon), 和柳穿鱼.

认识了Hebe后, 突然发现原来我的好几家邻居都种Hebe, 它们也正在开花, 只是植株都还小.

Hebe属约有90个种, 绝大多数是新西兰特有的常绿灌木, 夏秋生穗状或总状花序, 花色绚丽, 有白、蓝、紫、粉红、红等色. 许多品种获得英国皇家园艺协会 (Royal Horticultural Society) 颁发的园艺奖 (Award of Garden Merit). Hebe的适应性很强, 从酸性到碱性的土壤, 从肥沃到略贫瘠的土壤, 从沿海到山地都有分布. 它已从新西兰引种到世界各地.

下面的一些特征是在使用分科检索表前必须先采集的.

花重被, 两性, 雄蕊两枚, 雌蕊一枚, 花柱一枚, 柱头不分裂.

4枚花瓣联合, 尽管筒部很浅.

子房与萼筒及花瓣分离, 不粘合, 即子房上位.

子房横切显示子房被绿色的纵隔隔成左右两室, 每室内具两列, 多枚胚珠

灌木, 叶全缘, 交互对生, 在茎杆上排成近十字形的4列.

总状花序顶生于枝端, 或生于枝端叶腋

花色是变化的. 花蕾期和初开时是蓝紫色的,以后紫色逐渐消退变成白色的. 在同一花序上, 下方先开的老花是白色的,顶端的幼花是蓝紫色的; 上面的蓝紫花开后, 也逐渐变成白色,使得后期的花序全由白花组成.

一个花序从初始的蓝紫色变到后来的全白色, 像是一条变色龙. 在同一植株上因不同时期的花序呈现不同的变色阶段. 造成植株绚丽多彩. 这种情形在其它的植物群里是不多见的.

Hebe 的4枚花瓣略不等大, 使得第21项选择花冠两侧对称还是辐射对称的把握有一点麻烦. 因为4枚花瓣近相同, 我假定辐射对称这一特点,选第19组继续查, 得到车前科. 后来知道, 如果选两侧对称的第18组, 继续查也可以得到车前科.
