Thermostat better to have a recirculation function on fan except on/off and auto function. Then except unit/fan runs on heat/cool mode, the fan can also run 10 minutes for every hour, which gave you more circulation of indoor air.
Bitter is right on filter, 4" better than 2" than 1". Buy pleated filter, not fiberglass one. Buy MERV 8 not MERV 3. The higher MERV rating, the better filtrition result. But not to high above 8, too high will have too much pressure drop on filter.
