Boiler has 4 pipes?
2 pipe in&out for DHW(domestic Hot Water), which you use for shower etc. Cold water in to fill, hot water out to drain away. touch both pipes to feel if there is temperature different.
2 other pipes out of boiler and connected to heating coil in duct. it is close lump system with a water pump. water pump pumps water from boiler coils (Hot) to duct coil (cold) to heat up supply air. the water inside the close loop system does not mix with DHW, but heated by DHW within boiler. so feel this 2 pipes temperature too.
if room tstat calls for heat, then fan shall start, water pump shall run, is noise from fan noise or water pumping noise.
if pilot lighter not working, boiler water DHW not heated up, you do not have heat output from water heat.
Do not get fooled by furnace guy or boiler guy, if anyone told you to change the whole unit, let him go and call next one. unless your baby is more than 20 years old.
fix pilot lighter is just $100/200 or you can DIY, google it.
Not 100% accurate.
agree with Pro Fang, water heating more maintenance and potential trouble, not hot enough, not energy efficient. but it also has advantages as Pro Bitter not dehumidifying air too much. If you have hydronic radiant floor/ceiling heat, that is the most comfortable.
Good luck
