In a new twist on the stalled year-end fiscal cliff talks, House Speaker John Boehner has offered to raise taxes on earners making more than $1 million if Democrats agree to major cuts in entitlement programs, Reuters reported late Saturday.
A source told the Daily News that the White House is not going to take the offer, but noted it’s “progress.” President Obama wants tax hikes for households earning more than $250,000. “They moved on rates and lines of communication are open,” the source said, but “there’s a number of issues remaining.”
Boehner spokesman Michael Steel would not confirm there was any agreement on how to back away from the fiscal cliff. “We have not commented on the content of private discussions, and we’re certainly not going to comment on rumors,” he said.
The White House and Congress must reach a budget deal by Dec. 31 to prevent an automatic series of tax increases and spending cuts, or the country could plunge into another recession, experts say.
