i agree with you on slowing down the pace of the game, i.e. trying to drag the game to a low-point "boring-to-watch" game.
but man, everybody on earth knows that it's the way to win games over the speedy suns.
however, if you just let yao sit in the paint and expect suns to shoot bad for the night, rockets' fate is still in suns' hands.
rockets have to play the expanded zone for defense, if they want to save yao ming from rushing between the post and the arc. yao would definitely be drawn out a little bit when suns' center tries to make mid-range shoots. this is fine as long as yao does not go out to the perimeter to run like others. otherwise, he would be too slow to follow his guy and there will be open shots everywhere. therefore, playing expanded zone is the only way to defense suns.
on the offense side, yao should definitely come out, not just staying inside. after making a "great wall" for the 1st teammate (the ball handler), yao should try to make another "great wall" for somebody else (if tmac is not the ball handler, it should be tmac), then cut into the paint and try to hold the position. no matter who is the ball handler now, either the 1st or the 2nd teammate, don't just shoot the ball easily. pass the ball to yao ming after he gets the position inside; or just give the ball to tmac to see what he can do. if tmac does not see any good opportunities, pass the ball outside again to use 24 sec as much as you can.
but you can't just let yao stay inside
