在正则量子化中，Hilbert 空间是正则关系的表示，或者说是可观察量的代数的表示。场论中，场是局域的，而关联函数涉及到不同点上的场的乘积，或者说 “可观察量”。路径积分更可以看作可观察量空间上的线性泛函。Witten 的观点是，把不同点上的场放在一起形成所有可观察量的过程，跟数论中把不同局部域的信息合成整体信息的过程相似
