依照新命名系统，最早在英国发现的B117变种病毒将改称Alpha变种病毒，最早在南非发现的B1351将改称Beta变种病毒，最早在巴西发现的P1将改称Gamma变种病毒，而最早在印度发现的B1617有两个分支——属于须关切变种的B16172将改称Delta变种病毒，属于待观察变种的B16171将改称Kappa。
