It is usually saved for predetermined time period decided by the laboratory director and medical director sometimes approved by the staff. The specimen are saved and controlled refrigerated temperature to preserve their viability for possible retesting or additional tests required. Usually kept up to two ( 2 ) for documentation purposes mostly : quality assurance of correct specimen and proper testing. In other CYA ( cover your “ you know what “ purposes)
After this time the samples are no longer any good for testing and the predetermined time of detainment has expire the specimens are discarded in biohazards bags/ containers.
At our lab we had a “ biohazards disposal company “ pick up these properly disposed of specimens. Then these specimens are brought to a special incineration facility that incinerates the sample with super special incineration vents as to not aerosolize any biohazards into the air.
All standardized by the EPA for the public’s protection!

The specimens are stored either room temperature, in a fridge, or freezer.
Lab protocols are different, but generally, room temperature specimens are stored for one shift or one day, refrigerated specimens are kept for one to two weeks, and frozen specimens can be stored anywhere from a month to a year (rarely).
The specimens that have expired are tossed in a biohazard bag/container and are handled as biohazard material; this can include autoclaving, incinerating, or some other means.
