As a physician, I agree with the comment by D. Lynn (comment #9) — the most meaningful gifts are thank-you notes expressing a patient’s gratitude for my help. I work in a relatively low-paying field (Pediatrics), but a thank-you note from a parent whose child I have helped is far more treasured than any store-bought item. I also love drawings from my patients! Another particularly meaningful “gift” to a hospital-based physician is to send a note of appreciation to that physician’s superior; the subsequent recognition by one’s bosses for excellent patient care is a wonderful gift.
