The company came to be known for unproven claims that its products could be used to treat many diseases and conditions, including cancer, diabetes, autism and AIDS.[14][15] There is no evidence that any of these claims were or are true.[3][4][5][16][17][18]
In January 2001 the company wrote to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stating that it intended to sell several products, with health claims that in its opinion were permissible under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. The FDA responded in February 2001 that "The statements that you are making for these products suggest that they are intended to treat, prevent, cure, or mitigate diseases." and thus are not permitted.[19]
