do I need root canal?

My number 2 tooth has cavity and my dentist did filling three months ago. The tooth is now sensitive if I drink cold water. Besides sensitive to the cold drink, I don't have other complaint about it. So I wonder if I should have root canal or just ignore it. Thank you for your input.
