There are currently 2 types of pneumococcal vaccines: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13,a vaccine that covers 13 pneumococcal serotypes) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23,a vaccine that contains 12 of the serotypes included in PCV13, plus 11 additional serotypes.).

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13)is recommended for all children younger than 5 years old and for adults with certain risk factors. Children 2 years or older who are at high risk of pneumococcal disease should also receive the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). All adults 65 or older — and those 19 or older with risk factors — should receive PPSV23.
