One or two weeks after root canal, you can go for crown

Make sure your root canal successful first, to make a crown, the dentist will need to make a model first, then send to the lab to have it done, it will take another two weeks or so.
Post or not, it is your dentist opnion, I would prefer no post, but if your teeth is missing big part, you must have a post. Search youtube for some videos about post, you will have some ideas.
