If he had never had tetanus vaccine before, he needs 3 shots (2nd dose is 4-8 wks after first dose, and the 3rd dose is 6 months later), and then once every 10 years. In this case, the first shot may not do him any good if the wound was contaminated with tetanus. If he was fully immunized before, and his last dose was less than 5 years ago, he was fully protected. If He was fully immunized before and his last dose was between 5-10 years, he needed a booster dose then. If his last dose was more than 10 years ago, if suspect tetanus, it's recommended to have both immunoglobulin plus the booster.
