Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that helps transport oxygen. Hemoglobin in a urine sample is not normal and usually indicates that there is a trace amount of blood in the urine. This is called hemoglobinuria, which occurs when red blood cells break down in blood vessels and hemoglobin appears in the urine.
