It's the same everywhere

So don't think you are in the worst situation. It's just part of any organization. There are different ways politics is expressed, some more direct, more nasty, yet some other more subtle and less obvious, but any of it could be lethal if you can handle the people involved including yourself properly.

There's really no silver bullet. As long as you recognize it as reality and deal with it proactive rather than trying to avoid it, you'll be in better shape. You'll learn from experiences and lessions. Dealing with people is what you'd spend most of your time on as you climb up the organizational ladder. It's same in every human society throughout human history.

It's a good sign that you got into politics because it means you are at least somebody now :) so keep it up.
