you can stand in other people's shoes to understand their feeling.
what the medical school teach is treat the patient with empathy not sympathy. treat your patients like family members involve emtion, and this is not encouraged, imaging, you are very sick (like heart attack ), you are in pain (like terminal cancer), you are crying and emotional, the nurse/doctor is crying with you, she is panicing, does not know what to do. whereas another docotr/nurse is very calm and tells you that she understand your feeling, and she is trying to help you. who would you prefer?
Empathy in the profession, not sympathy.
